Interview with Linda Dominique Grosvenor the Princess of Guerrilla Marketing
Why do they call you The Princess of Guerrilla Marketing?
I started out self-publishing in 1998 and had to find an effective way to sell my titles online. I employed dozens of techniques and kept the ones that stuck. My name can be found across the web. I've done all of my promoting for the most part from home, with little and in some years, no travel at all. I'm still learning from the Guerrilla Marketing Queens out there. I'll settle for them referring to me as the Princess. It's flattering.
Why did you initially decide to self publish?
I self-published to spare myself from those dreaded rejection letters from the "big" houses telling me what will or will not sell. I figured if I proved them wrong they'd have no choice but to step up to the plate. I did. They have.
Some authors never get the recognition they deserve, do you consider yourself one of these?
Recognition would be good. I've never been in it to get recognition though. I have stories to tell so, that's my focus. Some of my books sell 30,000 copies, others 50,000 and I my goal is to peak out my latest release at over 100,000, but I write for a living and to be able to continue to write I must sell books. That's my goal, sales, not recognition.
In your opinion what is the state of fiction?
I'd say that fiction is more popular than it's ever been. More people are reading and it seems that even our churches and elementary schools are forming book clubs. It's easier than ever to get a book in print. If you're speaking of quality, I can't comment much on that. I don't read much and what I do read, I'm extremely selective about. So, if you were to ask me about the hottest books out now I probably wouldn't know much about them. My life consists of writing and keeping my family happy.
Your second novel Like Boogie On Tuesday won Romanceincolor's 2002 Reviewers Choice Award for Mainstream Fiction. How does that feel?
Shocking. There are so many other popular books that people are talking about. I never expected to win an award. It's a wonderfully put together website. I truly don't write for the goal of winning an award, but it does feel good to be recognized.
What is the best/worst part about being a published author?
The best part of being a published author is being able to clear your books out of your head. As an author I can say that I'm not truly satisfied with just finishing a story, I want it sent out into the world to make its mark. Until the book is on the shelves, things get backed up in my mind. I'm working on remedying that but right now I have so many projects waiting to be released that I do get a little anxious at times. The worst part of being a published author I'd have to say, is putting a whole lot of effort into pulling together a great book promotion course and still getting authors who want to me to verbally tell them everything I did to become successful INSTEAD of taking my course.
Why did you decide to begin teaching online promotion seminars?
I had been getting SPAM from so many authors. I mean huge book cover attachments and press releases that jam up my inbox. I don't have a publication or a forum to promote them so I imagine the authors were just sending out emails blindly to anyone with a valid email address. That's not the way to bring positive attention to your books and I knew that. I wanted to help them so I devised the Guerrilla Promote 101 course. The feedback from authors who have taken the course has been wonderful. How can new authors or those who just want to boost their book sales sign up for one of your online promotion seminars? My affordable online marketing course is available upon request. Drop me a line at Dominique@lindadominiquegrosvenor.com For details.
